POWER INTERRUPTION RECOVERY This process will guide the operator through the steps to recover from a brief ( less than 1 minute ) power interruption. The goal is to quickly restore critical support systems before they reach an inoperable state. This process should take less than 3 minutes.

If a power blink is observed, or the phase alarm activates, immediately follow these steps as soon as the power comes back on:

1) Re-activate the cooling water loop pumps. The controls are located at the entry to the source area. (Ground the high voltage cage). Push each start button. The source cooling water must also be re-activated. This control is on the side of the cabinet that is against the wall by the sputter source. You may need to hold the “on” switch for several seconds before the pump will remain on.

2) Check the vault cryopump compressors to verify that they have re-started. There is one in the high energy pumping station and one next to the low energy pumping station. If they are running they should be making noise and the pressure gauge should read ~300 psi on the HE unit, and ~75 psi on the LE unit. If they are not running try cycling the power switch on the front of the compressor, if that doesn’t work try cycling the breaker on the back of the compressor.

3) Return to the sputter source vacuum cabinet. Activate the systems by pushing the buttons indicated by the green arrows, from left to right, Fore Pump, Freon Compressor, Diffusion Pump, and, if those buttons have all turned green, the Baffle (gate) Valve. If the diffusion pump will not come on, check that the source cooling water is turned on.

4) Proceed to the mechanical room. Stand at the yellow circle painted on the floor in front of the main breaker panel. Push the reset and start buttons on panels A, B, & C. This will activate 2 air handlers, and the water pump behind you.

5) Return to the control room. Check the “main loop temp” on the alarm panel. If it is greater than 50 the chiller has failed and you will need staff to restart it. Do not re-start the accelerator, and turn down the magnets.

6) Return to the vault and check that the 4 cryopumps ( LE line, LE pumping station, HE pumping station, analyzer line) are still cold. Remember, the green part of the dial is NOT good. If they have failed, shut down the compressor to begin regeneration.

7) This process has preserved the vacuum and cooling systems. The ion gauges, gates valves and ion sources will need to be carefully re-started to resume operations. Call the lab staff personnel for assistance in these matters.
